The American thrash metal band was formed in Huntington Park, California in the year 1981. The band was founded by guitarists Jeff Hanneman and Kerry King. The band came to prominence with their 1986 release ‘Reign in Blood’. The album is often considered as the inspiration of death metal. Slayer is credited with being one of the ‘Big Four’ thrash metal acts and shares the exceptional status with other three thrash metal bands namely Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. The lyrics of their songs are generally written by Hanneman, King and bassist and vocalist Tom Araya. The topics on which the themes and lyrics are often pointing towards are serial killers, Satanism, warfare and religion. They have often received strong criticism from the religious people and have been banned from performing many times. The band’s debut album titled ‘Show No Mercy’ was released in the year 1983. Ever since that, the band has released eleven studio albums, two live albums, one box set, two EPs and six videos. The band has also won 2 Grammy Awards.
