Originally the band was formed in the year 1984 in Seattle, Washington. Foo Fighters was formed by the drummer of Nirvana fame Dave Grohl which initially started as a one-man project. Owing to Nirvana’s demise in the year 1994 which happened due to the unexpected suicide of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl went on with the formation of Foo Fighters.

The name of the band has been inspired from various UFO and aerial activities that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II collectively known as foo fighters.

The band’s eponymous debut album saw Dave Grohl as the only official member of the band. Foo Fighters completed their line up with the inclusion of bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith along with Nirvana’s touring band mate of Grohl, guitarist Pat Smear. The band started with gigs in Portland, Oregon.

The band has released seven albums all of which have been nominated for Grammy, out of which three have won.
