The influential Norwegian black metal band was formed in the year 1987. Originally the band was formed as a death metal band although after incorporating black metal style in their music in 1991 Darkthrone began to be treated as Norwegian black metal.

Darkthrone was formed in Kolbotn which is a small suburb of Oslo however it was originally called ‘Black Death’ which had the founding members Gylve Nagell who later became famous as Fenriz, guitarists Ivar Enger and Anders Risberget.

Generally lead guitarist/vocalist/lyricist and bass guitarist Nocturno Culto and drummer/rhythm guitarist/bassist/vocalist and lyricist Fenriz have been the only two members in the band and it has remained so for their major releases.

The most influential albums of the band are ‘A Blaze in the Northern Sky’, ‘Under a Funeral Moon’ and ‘Transilvanian Hunger’, which were released in 1992, 1993 and 1994 respectively. The band has so far released 14 studio albums, 5 demos, 3 EPs and 4 compilation albums.
